May 2015
Dear friends!
We keep supporting the children that came to Germany for medical treatment. The reports from the “front line”, that is, from our local diakonia groups, tell that our voulonteer aid workers attend nearly 40 children.
We provide subsistence to 5 families in Ukraine.
We are energetically trying to organize the trip abroad and medical treatment for 8 children and adults.
Let me introduce just two of those:
Danila, 4 y.o, from Svyatogorsk, Ukraine. Diagnosis: cancer, hydrocephalus. He underwent 3 surgeries and radiation therapy. This brought a positive result, yet a side effect was a micro-stroke, so he got blind in one eye and stopped walking. From November 2014 Danila remains at home, the doctors prescribe no further treatment. The family is in harsh financial conditions, they save money to pay for Danila’s analysis.
They need funds for medicine, especially for dissolving scald scars – 45% of skin is damaged, and also for quality food: owing weakened immune system, he requires vitamins. His mother is a widow and cannot work being busy with rehabilitation of the kid. This works: he has already started talking, he sits and stands up on his own, and is attempting to walk. At the moment we are searching a hospital for him that can provide his medical investigation and rehabilitation.
With the aid of Yakov from Hannover, we managed to give Danila a walking trainer. The mother wrote: “His joy has no limits! He does not want to get out of the trainer saying that now he can go everywhere on his own!” It’s also quite a reveal for the family: his weight is already 22 kg, and till the trainer has arrived they had to carry the child in their arms everywhere. Now he’s a way more on his self, he blows a kiss and sincerely thanks all of us. His support group URL: http:// odnoklassniki.ru / group / 51892453703818
Vladislav, 20 y.o. from Zhitomir, Ukraine. Diagnosis: intestinal deficiency as a consequence of total intestinal necrosis. Remains in a critical condition, receives no regular threatment.
In 2013, he has been hospitalized with an extremely rare diagnosis – 2 per million, related to a thrombosis of small intestine veins. He has lost 95% of small intestine, only 10 cm is left. Painful attempts to elongate the intestine brought no result. The intestine transplantation has been recommended. The parents called for help to many government and charity funds in Ukraine yet only got refusal letters.
Nobody in Ukraine is able to treat him, so Vladislav stays at home. His weight is 33 kg now. He requires special nutrition and medicine.
The family is in a grave financial condition. The parents rise another child who is 6 y.o. and experiences severe development retardation as a consequence of natal trauma. The parents have no job and only receive EUR 100 p.m. subsistence for the disabled children. Only medicine and special nutrition for Vladislav costs about EUR 700 p.m. Good Deed Diakonia is currently searching for a German hospital where they can help to Vladislav, and for sponsors who can support the family for coming months.

Other news:
– In April, Yana (baptised as Anna) from Abakan, 4 y.o. has underwent a complex heart surgery. Let us pray for her speedy recuperation!
– Nino, 18 y.e. girl from a village near Vladikavkaz, Ossetia, is being treated in Munich. There is a returned cancer. The situation is grave, there are multiple metastases, also in lungs. Yet Nino does not lose her courage. Please pray for her!
– In May, we sponsor several establishments in Mykolaiv, Ukraine: two orphanages that house at the moment 400 children from 5 to 18, and a retirement home with 300 elderly. There is a catastrophic situation over there. There is a lack of basics: linen, toys, furniture. There is a lack of food. Not mentioning the medicine and medical appliances required. The orphanages house war zone children brought from Loegansk and Donetsk: those who were left without relatives, wounded, found roving on city streets. Some of them require an urgent and expensive treatment. Others are in need of family and psychological trauma rehabilitation. Let me invite you to participate in collection of humanitarian help and funds for these establishments!
Let me conclude with an important announcements:
– First Orthodox Volunteer Day in Germany will be held in Cologne on July 4th. We organize it to tell about problems and opportunities of medical treatment abroad for children and adults, and assistance we can provide. We will recruit new volunteers and support those who are already involved with Good Deed Diakonia. We will exchange experience and strengthen our ties with allied volunteer organizations. We will spend together a wonderful and undoubtedly efficient day!
The program includes talks, workshops, poster session and practical part. We invite colleagues from Russia, Austria and Israel. We expect participation of representatives of the groups in all German parishes, including those that are yet only planned. We invite everybody interested in the topic. Please contact me for additional information and eventual registration, and follow the announcements at our site orhodiakonia.de.
Hurry up for good deeds!
